Abich Surprisingly Released by Mathare

Noah Abich, arguably Mathare United’s second best player last season, has been shown the door by the club.

The veteran fullback becomes the first major casualty of the mid-season transfer window which opened on June 1. His release, confirmed by the player himself and the Mathare United hierarchy comes as a surprise despite the fact that he sat out of the Slum Boys’ final three games of the first half of the season through injury.

Abich joined the now Francis Kimanzi-led side in 2014 and enjoyed his best season with them last year, scoring 9 goals with most of them coming from set pieces.

The former Tusker FC defender had until his release netted once this season in the 5-2 rout of Sofapaka at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos on February 27.

The decision to let go of Abich, who returned to the national team during the Cecafa Championship in Ethiopia last year, comes as a surprise as the Slum Boys could make do with his title-winning experience as they push for their first league glory since 2008.

Mathare finished the first half of the season tied second with Ulinzi Stars on 27 points.

In other transfer news, midfielder John Nairuka has completed his move from Ulinzi Stars to Posta Rangers while AFC Leopards have renewed their interest on former Kenyan international Peter ‘Pinchez’ Opiyo.
