Ghana manager Kwesi Appiah has urged their fans to ‘remain positive’ ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal battle against Tunisia in Ismailia, Monday evening.
The Black Stars topped their group which had title holders Cameroon to advance and face a Tunisia side who drew all their group matches but still finished second to group winners Mali.
Ghana’s progress was only confirmed on their final match as they beat Guinea-Bissau 2-0. Appiah has however told his side to focus on the next task at hand.
“The most important thing is to think about Tunisia’s game now,” said the former captain. “We plead to all Ghanaians to keep supporting the team with a positive mindset.
“My team is prepared both mentally and physically for the game on Monday.
“All our minds are on the game against Tunisia because we need to win the game on Monday so that we can think about other opponents.”
Tunisia have barely clicked in the tournament but Appiah has warned his men against complacency.
“Every team in the tournament is well prepared and ready to win the trophy so we will not underrate any opponent we meet in the tournament.”
Tunisia bring with them an unbeaten run of six games but haven’t lived up to the hype of being the second best ranked side heading into the tournament.
Striker Taha Yassine Khenissi, while admitting that the Carthage Eagles have been far from best, expects a different side in the last 16.
“We face Ghana with one aim, which is winning and qualifying,” he said.
“We don’t think about the group matches. You’ll see a fresh face for the national team and all the players are united to qualify the national team.”
Despite crashing out at the group stages, Tunisia gave a good account of themselves at the 2018 Fifa World Cup as they drove England to the edge and beat Panama. They have however not played anywhere close to how they did in Russia. They perhaps couldn’t believe their luck when they reached the Afcon knockout rounds despite not winning a match. There has to be a winner against Ghana though anf I feel the Black Stars will edge it.
