Youngster Ahmad Ahmed came off the bench to score the goal that secured draw masters Mathare United a point as they settled for a 1-1 result against hosts Bandari FC at the Mbaraki Stadium.
Francis Omondi’s foul on William Wadri inside the box had the referee point to the spot four minutes into the half hour mark and the foul winner stepped forward and beat David Okello who was making his debut between the posts for the Slum Boys.
Mathare, who started the match on a wrong footing with defender David Owino being forced off with an injury just eight minutes into the game, were on the backfoot during the earlier exchanges that saw Bandari twice come close to getting the opener, Okello denying Yema Mwana a one-on-one chance while Wycliffe Ochomo headed wide unmarked.
Cliff Nyakeya had Mathare’s best chance of the half just before the breather but his effort was cleared off the line by Bernard Odhiambo, the two sides going for the breather with the hosts leading.
Both sides had a go after the break but it wasn’t until the 85th minute when a goal was being celebrated, Ahmed firing a freekick past Faruk Shikhalo to earn the Slum Boys a fourth draw on the bounce and 10th overall this season, more than any other side. They remain third on the log on 34 points, two better than third-placed AFC Leopards who have two games in hand, and three behind Sofapaka who beat Wazito in Nairobi.
In Vihiga, hosts Vihiga United were beaten 2-0 by Tusker FC who scored two second half goals courtesy of Jackson Macharia and Collins Shivachi. The result puts the Brewers in the top half of the table while Vihiga remain in the relegation playoffs position.
Meanwhile after hammering Kakamega Homeboyz 6-1 last time out, Nakumatt FC were held to a barren draw by hosts Chemelil FC.
