Lake Region’s Barding High made a winning debut to the Airtel Rising Stars national finals as they danced to a 2-0 victory over Friends School Bukembe as the tournament got off to a flying start at the Moi Stadium, Kisumu County, Monday August 2.
Two goals either side of the half did the trick for Barding in the opening Pool A match played in front of a couple of fans who expectantly watched the proceedings.
Buka Ziko broke the deadlock at the quarter hour mark to give the Siaya-based side a deserved lead in a match they dominated during the early exchanges.
Nzoia Region’s Bukembe slowly settled into the game, keeping their hosts at bay as the half time whistle blew with only Ziko’s goal to count.
The second half was closely contested but Barding had that one extra bounce on their step. Barding’s Albert Ojolo sunk the ball in goalkeeper Jeremiah Mesuswa’s goal but he was flagged offside in the 79th minute but no one would deny Osiambo Ben who netted the second for Barding in the dying embers of the game.
Kathungi are tied on top of the group with Barding after also winning 2-0 against Cheptenye, Rashid Leja and Hamisi Salim scoring.
Group A matches continue on Wednesday, August 3 as Bukembe battle Kathungi High while Barding will face Cheptenye where victory will all but assure them of progress to the next round.
In the ladies’ category, Nyakach Girls thumped Kirigara Girls 4-0 with Mercy Airo scoring the opener before assisting Velmah Juma and Cynthia Akinyi’s goals. Njanjarin Deborah netted an own goal.
