Kenya Sevens Head Coach Benjamin Ayimba unveiled the Shujaa and Morans squads that will lead Kenya’s charge for the 2015 Safari Sevens title this weekend.
The stakes will be high for Kenya in that they will be gunning to reclaim the title they lost last year to Welsh Warriors while Ayimba will also use the tournament to test the players’ readiness and aptness for the upcoming Rio 2016 Olympics qualifiers.
Despite having a healthy mix of experience and young blood in both teams, rugby fans won’t get the opportunity to watch some of the country’s renowned sevens players including Collins Injera, Billy Odhiambo, Oscar Ayodi, Leonard Mugaisi,Tony Owuor, Patrice Agunda, Daniel Sikuta, Lavin Asego, Ian Minjire and Dennis Ombachi who are all recovering from injury.
Amonde, Agero skippers
Ayimba will coach the Shujaa squad which will be captained by the experienced Andrew Amonde, while Paul Murunga will be in charge of the Morans squad that will be skippered by exciting Kenya Harlequin half back Eden Agero.
While unveiling the squads on Wednesday, Ayimba said: “The squad composition boiled down to fitness and just looking at what the younger players have to offer in terms of leadership. It also gives us an opportunity to look at whom we can blood into the squad as the season progresses.”
On missing the big guns, Ayimba said: “Of course there is that injury concern we’ve been talking about. We are basically trying to manage their injuries as opposed to throwing in players with the aim of winning the Safari Sevens. We could include them and win the tournament but lose them for the long run. We are basically managing them and ensuring they are fit for the Olympic qualifiers in November.”
