Congolese side TP Mazembe continued the defence of their African Champions League crown with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Saint George of Ethiopia in Lubumbashi.
The victory which came via a late penalty from Jonathan Bolingi, was enough to give Mazembe a 3-2 aggregate win and move the holders into the last-16 of Africa’s premier club competition.
Also progressing to the next round were Tanzanian champions Young Africans (Yanga) who battled to a 1-1 draw away to Rwandan outfit APR who crashed out 2-3 having lost the first leg 1-2. Mamelodi Sundowns were also held to a one-all draw at AC Leopards but the South African side advanced 3-1 on aggregate having won the first leg 2-0.
Zambian champions Zesco United lost 0-2 away to Guinea’s Horoya AC but squeezed to the knockout round 4-3 on aggregate, while record Champions Al Ahly of Egypt won 2-0 at Angolan club Recreativo do Libolo, the first leg having ended barren.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Vita Club, Stade Malien, ASEC Mimosas, Zesco United, Mouloudia Bejaia, Entente Setif and Al Ahly Tripoli all booked their places in the last-16.
