Kenya women’s football team, Harambee Starlets, became the first side to book a spot in the semifinals of the 2016 Cecafa Women’s Championship after easing to a 4-0 win over Burundi on Tuesday (September 13) at the Njeru Technical Institute in Jinja, Uganda.
Starlets, 4-0 winners over Uganda in their Group A opener, made light work of a Burundi side who went into the match at the back of a 10-1 hammering of Zanzibar.
It meant that whichever side got victory in this clash would secure their spot in the semifinal and it was David Ouma’s side who prevailed.
Burundi held against their own during the opening exchanges and were saved by the offside flag which ruled out Esse Akida’s 14th minute goal. It wasn’t before long though before the Swallows were cut open as Neddy Atieno netted the opener in the 29th minute.
Three minutes later, captain Mary Kinuthia doubled the lead before Akida ensured a 3-0 half time lead.
Atieno grabbed her second of the match immediately after the interval to swing the three points home and take the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations-bound Starlets into the semis with their goalkeeper Vivian Akinyi yet to concede a goal in the competition.
Starlets’ final group match will be against Zanzibar who could be in for a long day if their thumping at the hands of Burundi is anything to go by.
