Champions League Review: Depay Puts Man United in Control, Lazio Edge Leverkusen

Dutch winger Memphis Depay starred as Manchester United put one foot in the Champions League group stages beating Club Brugge 3-1 in the first leg of their play-off match.

Depay netted two sublime goals on his debut for Man United at the European stage, the first one drawing his side level and the second putting them on the lead going into the interval. Michael Carrick had deflected a goal-bound effort into the back of his own net early on before the new signing from PSV stepped up with his twin strikes.

Substitute Marouane Fellaini scored a late third for the Old Trafford side to give them a commanding advantage heading into the return leg in Belgium next week Wednesday.

Lazio, Sporting Win

In other play-off matches Tuesday, Lazio recorded a 1-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in Rome.

Substitute Balde Keita burst through the Leverkusen defence before firing low past Bernd Leno in the 77th minute to give the Serie A side the advantage.

Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon needed a late Islam Slimani strike to earn a slim advantage over CSKA Moscow who scored a vital away goal through Seydou Doumbia in a 2-1 defeat.

Teofilo Gutierrez gave the Primeira Liga side the early advantage with a 12th minute opener, before Doumbia who had missed a penalty levelled before the break.

Baurzhan Dzholchiyev struck the decisive goal for Astana as they edged nearer to a first group stage appearance with a 1-0 win over APOEL, while BATE enjoyed the same result in their first leg against 10-man Partizan.
