Kenya’s top seed Ismael Changawa won the men’s doubles USTA/ITA Central Regional Championship over the weekend at the Seminole State at the Oklahoma City Tennis Centre.
The US-based tennis star teamed up with his College mate Guy Oryl Iradukunda in a gruelling match that lasted over two hours to defeat a team of Lumeta/Tidimane 6-2; 5-7; 7-5 to win the final.
Changawa’s Trojan team mate Iradukunda had earlier eliminated him in the men’s singles final 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.
Kenya open champ
Changawa, twice Kenya Open champion, is in the US on a tennis scholarship at Seminole State College, the college which failed to release him for the recently concluded African Games in Congo, Brazzaville.
In the men’s singles, the two players had split the set after Iradukunda won the first set 6-4, but Changawa, younger brother to Shufaa (Changawa), came back to win the second set 7-6 before Iradukunda grabbed the final one.
The win saw Seminole State College tennis team sweep all four regional championship events, men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, and women’s doubles. The winners will move on to the Small College National Championships in Sumter, South CarolinaOctober 15-18, 2015.
