Echesa Wins July Player of the Month

Chemelil Sugar midfielder Hillary Echesa has been crowned the July Sportpesa Footballer of the Month after scoring in three successive matches during the month for the fifth-placed cane millers.

The 30-year-old was behind Chemelil’s fine run in July, netting the winning goals against AFC Leopards and Sofapaka and also finding the net in a 2-2 draw against current league leaders Tusker FC.

His reward for the gong is a 43′ LG TV and Ksh. 100,000. He becomes the fifth recipient of the award this year, following in the footsteps of Timothy Otieno of Posta Rangers, Sharif Mohamed of Bandari, Wycliffe Ochomo of Muhoroni Youth and Khalid Aucho, formerly of Gor Mahia.

Echesa came out tops against other peak performers during the month which included Nairobi City Stars forward Ezekiel Odera, Ulinzi Stars forward and joint league topscorer John Makwata and AFC Leopards goalkeeper Ian Otieno.

The votes of Football writers however were hugely in favor of Echesa who got twenty votes, almost twice as much as runner-up Odera who polled eleven. Keeper Otieno was third with 10 votes while Makwatta got nine.

Echesa was humbled by the award and pledged to keep playing until he’s physically drained. “I’ll keep going until it becomes impossible for me to compete with the young boys physically.

“Right now I feel the same as I was years ago. I love playing football and I’m not exiting the scene anytime soon,” said.

His boss Francis Baraza purred over the veteran saying: “He (Echesa) has been very influential and carried the team along. When he’s on top of his game everyone steps up and we achieve good results and when he’s not having a good game you it affecting our entire unit. Such is his influence in this team.”

Dream run

Chemelil have started August even better, winning all their three matches 1-0 that has pushed them to fifth on the log. Laban Gambareko, Jared Obwoge and Victor Ochieng have scored the solitary winners against Nairobi City Stars, Muhoroni Youth and Bandari respectively.

They will be hoping for an unprecedented fourth straight victory when they host sugar belt compatriots Sony Sugar this Saturday (Aug 20) at 3pm. Sony won the first leg 1-0 in April, Justin Monda the scorer at the stroke of half time. Sony have now won at Chemelil since a 1-0 victory in March 2010.
