The red mark that has been hanging on Chemelil Sugar’s necks this latter stage of the season disappeared on Sunday evening after they secured a controversial 1-0 win away to Thika United at Ruaraka Grounds.
Samuel Ouma converted a debatable 34th minute penalty to give the visitors the lead and eventually the win that secured them at least another season in the top flight. Vincent Omumbo was adjudged to have pulled down Dennis Okangi in the box as Thika defended a freekick with the referee pointing to the spot.
Ouma stepped forward and sent Ugandan keeper Hamza Muyonge the wrong way, his fourth goal from the penalty spot this season.
Thika bitterly protested the goal even confronting the referee at the half time breather but all that ended in futility as Francis Baraza’s side deservedly won the match despite losing first choice keeper Jairus Adira to injury.
Irungu, Ruto off
Thika boss Moses Irungu and goalkeeper trainer Ruto were both sent to the stands as they continued contesting the official’s decisions in the match.
The win leaves Chemelil 13th on 31 points while Thika dropped out of the Top 8 following Mathare United’s 2-2 draw with Sofapaka.
