New Nairobi City Stars manager Gabriel Kingi Njoroge got his first win since taking over at the club with a 2-0 defeat of his former side Mathare United on Friday evening at Nyayo Stadium.
A goal each from Ebrinah Sanneh and Jimmy Bageya were enough for City Stars to claim their first win in 7 matches and only their third of the season.
Stanley Okumbi’s side were dominated in the game and struggled to get behind a well-organized City Stars side. The closest they came to scoring in the game was in the 80th minute when free-kick specialist Noah Abich saw his effort come off the woodwork.
Sanneh breaks deadlock
City Stars, second from bottom, got their opener at the stroke of half time, Sanneh slotting home a pass from Levy Muaka after a quick City Stars counterattack. The Gambian had two more chances to punish Mathare but missed the target on both occasions.
Okumbi who orchestrated Tusker’s downfall in their last match rung the changes after the interval but nothing seemed to work against the minnows. As time wore on, it looked like either City Stars would hold on for a narrow win, or add another goal. The latter came to pass as Bageya found the second in the 87th minute after combining well with his fellow Ugandan Fred Nkata.
The defeat scampered Mathare United’s quest to move above Bandari into 6th position and the Dockers have a chance to go 4 points ahead should they beat Chemelil on Saturday. City Stars however remain second from the basement but are only two points behind 14th-placed Chemelil, and one further adrift of KCB in 13th position.
Arita denies Sofapaka
At the same stadium, Sofapaka blew a chance to move into second spot after they were held 1-1 by Ushuru. David Mbakiye had given Sofapaka the lead with a 25th minute header off a Wylciffe Opondo cross but Moses Arita breached Batoto Ba Mungu’s offside trap 10 minutes before the final whistle to slot home the equalizer for Ushuru.
It was the least they deserved as both sides contributed to some poor quality football under the Nyayo floodlights. Ushuru remained 9th on the log but could drop a position down should Muhoroni beat Thika on Sunday.
The league continues Saturday with Tusker away to Western Stima, Sony Sugar hosting Ulinzi Stars at Awendo Stadium and Bandari welcoming Chemelil at the Mbaraki Stadium, Mombasa.
