Diego Costa scored the only goal and had Per Mertesacker sent off as Chelsea earned a 1-0 victory away to title-chasing Arsenal at the Emirates.
The Gunners, who had dropped to third prior to the match and remained there after the defeat, were reduced to 10 men with just 18 minutes on the clock when the towering German center-back brought down Costa who was through on goal. Referee Mark Clattenburg went to his pocket and showed Mertesacker a red card.
Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger, hauled off striker Olivier Giroud with Gabriel Paulista coming on.
However, the Blues would take the lead just five minutes after being given the one-man advantage, Costa tucking home Branislav Ivanovic’s low cross.
The Spaniard could have doubled his tally had Petr Cech not pulled a smart save while the busy Ivanovic had his header cleared off the line by Nacho Monreal.
Mathieu Flamini had the chance to find the equalizer for the hosts but he fired over from close range.
The defeat leaves the Gunners third on the log, tied on 44 points with second-placed Manchester City who have a superior goal difference. Leicester City are three points ahead of the duo on 47 points.
The Blues on the other hand move up to 13th position with 28 points and 13th position.
In an earlier kickoff, Andre Ayew netted the winning goal for Swansea City who won 2-1 at Everton. The Swans, playing for the first time under watch of their new manager Francesco Guidolin, took the lead through a Gylfi Sigurdsson’s penalty in the 17th minute but a Jack Cork drew the Toffees level only for Ayew’s deflected effort three minutes after the hour mark won it for the Welsh outfit.
