Harambee Starlets’ impressive run at the 2016 L’Alcúdia International Football (COTIF) Tournament came to an end at the feet of Real Betis who denied David Ouma’s side a spot in the final following a 2-0 defeat.
Starlets had matched to the semifinals following an impressive 3-0 and 3-1 wins over Benfica and Espanyol respectively but they just couldn’t find the goals against Betis.
The two sides played out a barren draw in the opening interval but the hosts switched up a gear after the break, scoring the twin goals. Paula Moreno scored the game’s opening goal in the 54th minute before Maria Bernal doubled the Spanish side’s advantage 13 minutes later.
The twin goals proved one too many for Starlets who will now play for third-place against Espanyol this Thursday. The two sides met in the group stages with Starlets winning 3-1.
Real Betis will battle Venezuela Women in the final, the latter having beaten Espanyol on post-match penalties.
