Wellington Ochieng’ has completed his move from Muhoroni Youth to reigning Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia, the defender penning a two-year contract.
Ochieng’ becomes Kogalo’s third signing during the mid-season transfer window after the club signed Brazilian striker Thiago Lima Da Silva and Baron Oketch Jobita from Western Stima.
Confirming the move to FourFourTwoMedia.com, Ochieng expressed his delight terming the move ‘a dream’ while also thanking his former employers for giving him the opportunity to make a name for himself.
“I am very happy to move to one of the best clubs in the region. It’s a new challenge, a new environment but am willing and ready to learn and develop as a player.
“I had a wonderful time at Muhoroni, they gave me the opportunity to play but now I have a chance to improve as a player and I can’t wait to meet my new teammates and get started,” he told FourFourTwoMedia.
Kshs. 2 million
Ochieng’s, a workhorse on the pitch, has been one of Muhoroni’s key players over the last couple of seasons when operating either as a center half or a fullback. Muhoroni Chairman Moses Adagala had slapped Kshs. 2 million on the defender’s head which was four times what Gor Mahia had tabled (Kshs. 500,000) but it seems the two sides reached a compromise.
The highly rated defender took a sabbatical from football at the end of last season in order to concentrate on his studies, only to make a return in March with his first match being a 2-1 defeat at Ulinzi Stars in a round 6 Kenyan Premier League encounter.
Ochieng, who can play across all the four positions at the back, scored his first goal of the season in the KPL Top 8 quarterfinal against Sofapaka, a match the sugar belt side won 3-0.
His signing brings to 10 the number of defenders at Kogalo and he will be eyeing the centerhalf positions alongside the likes of Musa Mohammed, Harun Shakava and Jackson Saleh or the fullback spots guarded by Abouba Sibomana, Luke Ochieng, Karim-Abdul Nizigiyimana and Eric Ouma.
