Hosts, Ethiopia, joined Uganda Cranes in the semifinals of the 2015 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup after edging Tanzania 4-3 on post match penalties in their quarterfinal clash in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The two sides could not be separated at full time which ended on a 1-1 stalemate, the same result that they fought to during their clash in the group stage. John Bocco had given the Taifa Stars a 25th minute lead but Gatoch Panom drilled home the equalizer from the penalty spot after 57 minutes.
A tense game ended 1-1 at the final whistle, sending the match to penalties. Tanzania missed two spot-kicks through Jonas Mkude and Shomari Kapombe while Ethiopia scored all theirs to win the clash 4-3 and join Uganda, 2-0 winners over Malawi in the first quarterfinal, in the semis.
This is the first time the Taifa Stars have failed to reach the semifinals since 2007. They finished third in 2008, fourth in 2009, won it as hosts in 2010 and have finished fourth the past three editions (2011, 12, 13).
The Walia Antelopes on the other hand have booked a spot in the semis for the first time since 2010 when they finished fourth. The two other semifinalists will be determined tomorrow, Tuesday Dec. 1, when reigning champions Kenya face Rwanda while South Sudan will battle neigbors Sudan.
