Kenya Sevens will face Japan in the Hong Kong Sevens Challenge Trophy quarterfinals after they failed to get into the Main Cup competition following two defeats and a single victory in their Pool B.
Shujaa, beaten 17-14 by Canada before being taken to the cleaners by South Africa who ran out with a 35-10 win, edged France 29-12 to book their spot in the trophy quarters.
Frank Wanyama’s twin tries and a try each from Billy Odhiambo, Dennis Ombachi and Eden Agero were enough to give Shujaa victory over the French in the last pool match.
They will battle Japan Sunday April 9 at 5.36am. France also qualified for the Challenge Trophy quarters despite the defeat and will face Wales. Other teams in contention for the inferior trophy include Russia who will battle South Korea as well as Samoa and Scotland who will face each other.
Meanwhile Australia, South Africa, USA and Fiji remain unbeaten at the Cathay Pacific / HSBC Hong Kong Sevens as day two produced yet another day of thrilling sevens action in the Hong Kong heat.
Australia will be happy with their performance on Saturday as they followed up their day one win over Samoa with victories against South Korea and England to ensure their place in the quarter-finals against Argentina.
The other quarter-finals on Sunday will see Fiji play Canada, USA face England and a mouth watering encounter as South Africa take on New Zealand.
Elsewhere in the World Rugby series qualifier competition, Chile, Germany, Papua New Guinea and Spain progressed to the semi-finals on Sunday.
