Chemelil Hold Silky Mathare, Tusker Rally to Win

Dan Mwaura's effort that ricocheted off the crossbar was the closest Mathare United came to beating visiting Chemelil Sugar who put in a fine defensive performance to ensure they left Thika sub-County Stadium with a point.

Mathare, coming into this match at the back of an embarrassing 5-1 defeat away to Ulinzi Stars, would feel like they deserved a lot more than just the point in this match where they attacked their visitors with great abandon but could not beat Jairus Adira. Mwaura had his head buried on his hands after his lovely touch and go with Tyson Otieno ended with the effort hitting the bar in what was the best chance of the second interval.

The opening half had minimal chances with the best of them falling Mathare United’s way. Cliff Nyakeya was lively during the opening five minutes and should have dragged his team ahead twice during that time but he somehow failed to beat Adira.

His No. 9 Derrick Onyango, didn’t fair any better halfway into the match when he benefited from an awful back pass but he took one too many touches, allowing the culprit James Omino to recover and make a goal-saving block. A minute later, Onyango aimed feebly at Adira who was the busiest of the two keepers.

Chemelil barely created any chances thanks in part to Laban Gambareko who was caught offside one too many times before he was taken off the show moments after the breather.

The shared point leaves Mathare in 16th place with 6 points while Chemelil look comfortable in fifth with 12 points.

Meanwhile two goals in a space of five minutes from Marlon Tangauzi and Humphrey Mieno saw reigning champions Tusker FC rally from behind to beat Nakumatt 2-1 at the Afraha Stadium.

Former AFC Leopards man Kepha Aswani had given Nakumatt the lead inside 6 minutes but the Tusker duo struck after the 75th minute to ensure the maximum points.

Current league leaders Posta Rangers extended their unbeaten run with a stunning 1-0 win at Sony Sugar, Gerald Obwoge with the solitary goal.
