Kenya’s participation in the four-team Heroes Intercontinental Cup tournament ended in failure after they were beaten 2-0 by hosts India in the final held at Mumbai Sports Arenax Sunday (10).
Captain Sunil Chhetri earning his 101st cap for India scored both goals in the first half to ensure the trophy remained home.
Chhetri finished on four goals in two matches against Kenya, having scored twice when the two sides met in the round robin stage in a match India won 3-0.
The opening goal came just eight minutes in, Chhetri finishing from inside area. He was the man to punish a defensive lap from the visitors at the half hour mark.
Kenya, who had to win against New Zealand and Chinese Taipei to earn a final spot, failed to reply to any of the goals as they settled for the runners up position. The tournament, which was graced by a hoard of players based in the Kenyan Premier League, was being used by new boss Sebastian Migne as part of preparations for the 2019 Africa Nations Cup qualifiers. Prior to the trip, Stars played two friendlies against Swaziland and Equatorial, losing 1-0 against the former and beating the latter 1-0 courtesy of new Sofapaka striker Pistone Mutamba.
