As widely expected, Mathare United boss Francis Kimanzi was named the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) coach of the month for February.
The former Kenya national team head coach helped the Slum Boys finish the month on top of the league after two wins and a draw in the three matches they played.
Kimanzi got 21 points from the SJAK Football Committee to beat off competition from Muhoroni Youth coach James Omondi and Posta Rangers’ Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno who garnered 17 and 16 points respectively.
Mathare played to a 1-1 draw against AFC Leopards, then won their next two matches, edging Ushuru 1-0 Ushuru and thumping Sofapaka 5-2. Muhoroni Youth on the other hand won two and lost one, while Posta won one and drew two.
Kimanzi, while giving credit to his players and a ‘fatherly technical bench’, said he was ‘surprised’ to receive the award and recognition from sports journalists as he took home Kshs. 50,000 and a personalized trophy.
The award is sponsored by SJAK and Fidelity Insurance.
