AFC Leopards have received a major blow with news that their leading goalscorer, Ezekiel Odera, will miss this Saturday’s Mashemeji derby battle against rivals Gor Mahia.
Odera’s booking in the win over Thika United last weekend saw him pick an automatic one-match suspension, and adding to a red card he had also picked, he will also miss the round 29 clash against Wazito FC.
The evergreen striker has so far banged in 12 goals in the Kenyan Premier League, making him the club’s leading scorer. He’s still some three behind Nzoia United’s Elvis Rupia who’s 15 has him leading the race for the golden boot.
Odera, a player who was once in Gor Mahia’s books, becomes the second Ingwe player to be ruled out of the clash after Marvin Omondi Nabwire who is struggling with an injury. Omondi has been in a rich vein of form, contributing six league goals from a midfield position.
Leopards will have added pressure at the derby as they know that anything less than victory will hand Gor Mahia the 2018 Kenyan Premier League title.
Kogalo whipped Sofapaka 3-0 this past Wednesday despite resting the entire preferred starting XI. A point against the enemy will secure a 17th league title for Dylan Kerr’s side.
The duo have met twice this year with Gor Mahia winning both matches – a 1-0 victory in the Super Cup and a 2-1 success in the first leg league meeting.
Leopards last beat their archrivals in March 2016 when Lamine Diallo scored a second half winner in a 1-0 success. Since then, the duo have met 6 times with Kogalo winning on five occasions with the other match ending in a one-all draw.
