AFC Leopards’ poor run against Chemelil Sugar continued as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at Moi Stadium, Kisumu as the second half of the 2016 Kenyan Premier League commenced.
A goal from Hillary Echesa five minutes after the restart was enough to hand Ivan Minnaert’s side their fifth defeat in 7 matches despite a starting XI that had SIX new signings starting.
Ian Otieno guarded the goalpost with Edwin Wafula, Joshua Mawira, Eugene Ambulwa and Jackson Saleh playing in defence
while captain Bernard Mangoli led the midfield battle as Kepha Aswani led the frontline with new signing Paul Kiongera starting from the bench.
It was a poor game however that had few chances especially in the first half that ended with neither of the keepers stretched to their limits.
However, the hosts powered off the blocks after the break and got their goal in the 50th minute, Morris Wandera’s cross being slotted home by Echesa.
Erastus Mwaniki could have made it 2-0 shortly after the hour mark but Leopards keeper Otieno came off his line to sweep the danger away. Minnaert replaced Andrew Tololwa with Kiongera but the former KCB striker could not cap his debut with a goal as Leopards slumped to yet another defeat at the hand of Francis Baraza’s men who moved to 9th with the win while Ingwe slumped to 13th on the log.
In other matches, Muhoroni Youth conceded a late Oliver Maloba goal as they settled for a 1-1 draw with Nairobi City Stars. Francis Ocholla gave the visitors a 12th minute lead but after some wasteful finishing from Bobby Ogolla’s side, Maloba gave Stars the equalizer late in the second half.
Western Stima beat bottom side Sofapaka 2-1 with Kenneth Muguna and Fred Shimonyo scoring after the interval. Former Mathare Untied defender Noah Abich netted the consolation goal for David Ouma’s side in stoppage time.
Ushuru FC beat Sony Sugar 2-1, Rodgers Ochieng and Kennedy Oduor scoring.
