New Tusker FC boss Robert Matano made the perfect return to his second stint at the club as he oversaw a 1-0 win over Wazito FC, just over 24 hours after he was named the new honcho by the club’s management.
Robert Achema fed off a pass from Mathew Odongo which should have been cut off by the Wazito defence to score the game’s only goal after 12 minutes.
It was a justifiable reward for the Brewers who showed more intent during the opening exchanges with Odongo Essex likely down the right channel.
The goal came after intense pressure from the visitors but it could have been avoided had Wazito keeper Philip Odhiambo had better communication with his rearguard. A game of few clear cut chances had the Brewers holding the narrow lead at the interval but they had their back against the wall after the breather.
Substitute Ibrahim Mao continued to push for a starting role as he whipped in two free-kicks that almost resulted to goals, his presence on the pitch coinciding with Wazito’s best moments in Tusker’s goal mouth. Lanky forward Pistone Mutamba, scorer of the winner against Mathare last time out, came close with a header late on but was unlucky to see it fly over.
Matano’s men would ultimately hold on for the full points, only their third of the season but one that gives the new boss a fine start.
In other matches, leaders Gor Mahia surrendered a 2-0 half time lead and had keeper Boniface Oluoch sent off in a 2-2 draw against Chemelil while AFC Leopards and Kariobangi Sharks settled for a one-half draw. Zoo FC picked up an important win on the road, holding hosts Bandari FC to a 2-2 draw at Mbaraki.
League matches continue this coming weekend.
