France international Jeremy Menez will need surgery after appearing to lose a significant chunk of his right ear during a pre-season friendly.
The 29-year-old striker joined Bordeaux from AC Milan this week and turned out for his new side against FC Lorient on Wednesday, where he clashed with midfielder Didier Ndong.
Ndong accidentally caught Menez’s ear as his opponent fell to the ground under challenge and issued a full apology after seeing the extent of Menez’s injury.
Ndong said: “I offer my apologies to Jeremy Menez and Bordeaux following a totally unintentional accident, which had unfortunate consequences for the striker.
“I give him my full support for the coming days and hope to see him very quickly on the pitches of Ligue 1.”
A statement on the Bordeaux website read: “During the friendly match between FC Lorient and Girondins de Bordeaux tonight in Sarzeau, Jeremy Menez had to prematurely leave his team-mates after a collision with Didier Ndong.
“The French international left the pitch with his right ear cut, requiring surgical procedure.”
