Relegated Mount Kenya United suffered their 24th loss of a catastrophic 2018-19 Kenyan Premier League season as second half goals by their former player Boniface Mukhekhe secured his current employers AFC Leopards a 2-0 victory in Machakos.
Mukhekhe, a mid-season signing from the financially bedridden side, scored both goals in the final 15 minutes as Leopards returned to winning ways.
Leopards went into the match at the back of two defeats, the lattermost being the Mashemeji Derby capitulation that all but – painfully – handed sworn rivals Gor Mahia their third successive league title.
Mount Kenya, playing just to honor their remaining fixtures, somehow managed to keep silent the Ingwe attack for the entire half and up until the 75th minute.
Mukhekhe easily slotted home at the back post after beating his marker to Paul Were’s eye on the needle cross from the left following a quick counterattack.
The winger sealed the win in the second minute of added time after completing a lovely interchange with Soter Kayumba.
Victory lifted Leopards two places up to 9th with 42 points with two games to go. They will not be able to match the 52-point haul they achieved last season, nor match their 7th place finish.
Leopards’ final two games will be against Tusker FC and Western Stima while Mount Kenya wrap up their topflight stay with games against Kariobangi Sharks and Ulinzi Stars.
Meanwhile in the only other match played Thursday, Danson Chetambe scored the equalizer as traveling Zoo Kericho got a point at Tusker FC in Ruaraka.
