Wazito FC, Kisumu All Stars and Nairobi Stima will take their battle for promotion to next season’s Kenyan Premier League (KPL) to the final day after they all won their penultimate games in the 2019 National Super League (NSL) to keep the table tight.
With one round of matches left to play this Sunday, June 9, Wazito lead the standings with 78 points, just one better than second – placed Kisumu who are only separated from Stima by a superior goal difference.
Wazito soaked in early pressure then switched on the gear to overpower FC Talanta 4-1 at Camp Toyoyo. Amos Asembeka, subtitute Collins Neto and Paul Acquah netted before the break with Musa Masika having a hand in all the goals.
Wilson Anekeya added the fourth from the spot after Joe Wathira was tripped in the box.
Talanta’s consolation was slotted home by Job Tinyo in the first minute of second half added time.
Kisumu All Stars were also involved in a high scoring clash, beating visiting Green Commandos 4-2 at Moi Stadium, Kisumu.
Erick Otieno’s brace was added onto by goals from Dismas Amunga and Ian Motanda. Alex Ochando and Richard Onyango netted for the relegation battling Commandos.
Nairobi Stima ensured they will get at least a playoff spot should they fail to dislodge Kisumu with a 2-0 win at Shabana., Shela Mandela and Curtis Wekesa scoring.
The final day drama will see Wazito host St. Joseph, Stima travel to Eldoret Youth and Kisumu journey to Thika who are fighting for safety.
Any slip-ups and a promotion-cum-relegation playoff against Posta Rangers awaits.
Things couldn’t be tighter at the bottom where four teams are fighting for their lives.
Bottom side Kangemi Allstars, Green Commandos, Thika United and Migori Youth, who occupy the final survival spot, are only separated by three points heading into the final day.
The biggest match of the relegation zone could be Migori hosting Kangemi with the winner of that much likely to survive.
Thika face the toughest assignment as they host promotion-chasing Kisumu while Commandos will be at home to Coast Stima.
It promises to be a dramatic final day.
