Serial goalscorer, Ezekiel Odera, was the star man as his AFC Leopards team registered a third win on the bounce with a 4-2 win over Nakumatt FC at the Machakos Stadium, Sunday.
The clean-shaved marksman scored two and was involved in the other two as Rodolfo Zapata’s men moved above Sofapaka and into third place in the Kenyan Premier League log.
A goal-laden first half produced four goals as both sides went for the jugular, especially the Leopard, who were the first to get their fans going as Odera teed up Jaffery Owiti for the game’s opener just five minutes in.
Leopards looked determined to finish the job early and after captain Duncan Otieno rattled Philip Odhiambo’s post from a freekick, Odera stepped forward with two quick goals in the 18th and 21st minutes. The striker now has 11 goals, making him joint club topscorers with Wyvonne Isuzza.
Nakumatt pulled one back almost immediately through Joe Wathira who converted a penalty after being fouled in the box by Leopards keeper Ezekiel Owade. 3-1 with barely half an hour played.
Unfortunately for the watching crowd, the goals dried up until just after the hour mark when Odera put another on the platter for Marvin Nabwire who tucked home what was his third goal in as many matches and fifth for the season.
Nakumatt halved the scoreline with 10 minutes to the end through winger Timonah Wanyonyi who was at one time in Leopards’ payroll.
The win lifts Leopards into third with 45 points, three behind second-placed Bandari who have played a game more. The Dockers won for a fourth consecutive time, edging host Tusker FC 1-0 courtesy of a fourth minute goal from Yema Mwana. Leopards’ course was also helped by Sofapaka losing by a solitary goal to Vihiga United.
At Thika Stadium, Wazito FC won the relegation scrap against hosts Thika, coming from behind to earn a crucial result that could aid their fight to avoid the drop.
Enock Agwanda scored in the third minute of first half added time as Sony Sugar moved into the top half of the table, winning 1-0 at Ulinzi Stars while Ahmed Ahmed scored the winner as Mathare United ended their 8-match winless drought with a 2-1 victory over Kariobangi Sharks at the Kasarani Stadium.
