Barely 24 hours after a disappointing 2-3 loss to the Central Africa Republic in an International FIFA Friendly, the Football Kenya Federation(FKF) has moved on swiftly to make changes to the Senior team technical bench.
Stand in coach Stanley Okumbi has been demoted to the junior team and will now take charge of the Under 20 side which was under the custody of Hesbon Nyaminde. Okumbi’s assistant Frank Ouna will also head to the junior side with goalkeeper coach Haggai Azande also headed there.
FKF however insist that the changes are not as result of the dismal performances against The Comoros Islands and the Central Africa Republic. According the federation’s communication officer Barry Otieno, Okumbi has a contract with the federation and will not be part of the new technical bench that will be unveiled on May 1st.
Okumbi was first named Stars coach in 2016, succeeding Bobby Williamson whom the federation claimed that they couldn’t afford his monthly salary which was around Ksh2.5m.He was later reappointed to take over from Paul Put early this year and his first assignment was not what all Kenyans expected.
Former Egypt national team coach Rudolf Josef Krol has been heavily linked with the vacant position at the helm of the Stars who are vying to make the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.
Kenya are third in Group F of the AFCON qualifying on goal difference after losing their opening clash 1-2 away to Sierra Leone.
Kenya next host Ghana in September in Nairobi.
