Oliech Debuts as Ayimba Names 7s Squad

The Kenya Sevens team for the next two rounds of the HSBC Sevens World Series in Las Vegas (4-6 March) and Vancouver (12-13 March) was named on Wednesday 24 February 2016 at the RFUEA Grounds by Head Coach Benjamin Ayimba.

Ayimba has made four changes to the side that did duty in Wellington and Sydney

Resolution Impala Saracens utility back Samuel Oliech has been handed his World Series debut while Mwamba’s Dennis Ombachi who scored the try that secured Kenya’s Olympic qualification has been called up for his first appearance of the season. Augustine Lugonzo and Leonard Mugaisi also return to the fray after last appearing in Dubai and Cape Town respectively.

The players rested for this tour are Donald Aluoch, Nelson Oyoo, Eden Agero and Bush Mwale who is injured.

Ayimba said the changes were rotational, adding, “ Mugaisi and Lugonzo have been there before. As always we want to introduce a younger player, in this case Sammy Oliech. “

Speaking on group composition, Ayimba said, “It is tricky to play teams that are below us because they come hard knowing that we are a scalp that they can claim. Our last outing against New Zealand was not pretty and we look to improve our performance and not lift our foot off the pedal.”

Kenya are in Pool A and will face New Zealand, Portugal and Russia. Kenya is currently eighth on the Sevens World Series log after four tournaments, on 42 points.

The team departs for Vegas on Sunday 28 February and returns to the country on Thursday 17 March. (KRU)
