Kenyan international, Michael Olunga, announced himself to Spanish football in epic fashion as he netted twice in as many minutes for his new employers Girona FC who thumped Ripoll FC 8-0 in a charity match.
The former Gor Mahia and IF Djurgarden striker completed his loan move from Chinese outside Guizhou Zhicheng to the new La Liga recruits on the European transfer deadline day and was in the moods here as he joined the goalscoring party.
Goals from Carles Planas, Nigerian Olarenwaju Kayode and Spanish midfielder Portu had Girona 3-0 up at the breather. Olunga was among a host of substitutes as the second half began. Aday Benitez put Girona 4-0 up in the 61st minute, a goal that cued Olunga’s double, the first coming in the 70th minute and the second two minutes later.
Two further goals in the 73rd and 77th minute from Marlos Moreno and Johan Mojica completed the rout in a match that was held to honor the victims of the August 8 Barcelona attack.
Olunga will be hoping he can get the nod to make his La Liga debut when they travel to San Mames, Bilbao to face Athletic Bilbao this Sunday, September 10. He is the second Kenyan to play in the Spanish league, following in the footsteps of MacDonald Mariga who featured for Real Sociedad.
They are currently placed 6th in the La Liga table with 4 points from two games after a 2-2 draw against Atletico Madrid and a 1-0 victory over Malaga.
