Olunga’s Expertly-Taken Brace Sees off Leopards

Birthday boy, Micheal Olunga scored a brace as Harambee Stars beat DR Congo 2-1 in a friendly match played at the packed Machakos County Stadium.

It was a quite defensive approach by Stars coach Stanley Okumbi who deployed five defenders, Joackins Atudo, David Owino, Brian Mandela,  David Ochieng’ and Abud Omar in the starting lineup with the visitors fielding most of the players that played in the Africa Cup of Nations held in Gabon in January.

South Africa based Brian Mandela picked Olunga who ran through the Congolese defence before unleashing a power drive past Joel Kasumbua to give Stars the lead in the third minute of the game.

In the 27th minute of the game, David Ochieng ‘Cheche’ almost doubled the lead from a Jesse Were freekick but the New York Cosmos man headed directly at Kiasumbua,a minute later the Leopards made their first real attack of the game when Neekens Kebano got clear but a last ditch effort by captain Victor Wanyama cleared the danger.

Ulinzi Stars’ Samuel Onyango earning his second cap for Stars also had his effort tipped over by Kiasumbua for a fruitless corner.

The second half began with the visitors pressing high, forcing corner after corner. In the 55th minute of the game, Bonface Oluoch pushed away a Junior Kabananga in swinger but Florence Imbenge’s side could not be denied minutes later when former Chelsea man Gael Kakuta curled in a free kick to restore parity.

Kenya slowly grew back into the game and the second goal was sheer hard work from Zesco United’s David Owino who dispossessed Kabananga, ran through the half way line before realeasing Samuel Onyango who squared to Olunga for an easy tap in.
