Fallen giants Shabana FC sealed a return to the second tier National Super League after edging Mwatate United 7-6 on post-match penalties during the FKF Division One promotion playoff hosted at the Kasarani Stadium, Sunday.
Buoyed by a decent crowd, the two sides went toe to toe and little separated them at the half time whistle which blew with the game barren.
The second half wasn’t any different, although a goal a piece was added to the scoreline.
Far-traveling Mwatate from Taita Taveta County netted first courtesy of a fine individual strike from John Musyoka immediately after the resumption.
Shabana would push for an equalizer which they got two minutes into the hour mark, Dennis Nyangwono heading home Wycliffe Nyang’echi’s cross from a corner.
Parity remained till the very end, ushering in penalties. Both sides netted their first six takes but Victor Omollo missed his and Mwatate’s 7th to give Shabana the win.
The club’s fans showed their elation by storming into the pitch to celebrate with the players.
Shabana, relegated to the third tier two seasons ago, join Zone B champions Eldoret Youth and Zone A winners Fortune Sacco who both earned automatic promotions.
Meanwhile Ushuru FC will be one of Shabana’s opponents in the second tier after they were beaten 2-0 on the day and 3-0 on aggregate by Nakumatt FC in the topflight promotion play-off.
