AFC Leopards made light work of Wazito FC as they stormed their way into the GOtv Shield semis with a resounding 7-1 victory over the National Super League outfit in their quarterfinal clash played at the Nyayo Stadium, Sunday evening.
Aleixis Kitenge scored a hat-trick, all from the spot and two in the opening half, as Matano’s men reached the semis on a day that holders Tusker FC got eliminated by Vihiga United earlier on the day. The duo will clash in the semifinal.
Wazito started hitting the self destruct button as early as the 7th minute when they conceded the first of three penalties. Kitenge stepped forward and drilled the ball into the bottom right corner despite attempts by Wazito keeper Steve Njunge to keep it out.
Two minutes later, it was 2-0 and again from the penalty spot, this time Kitenge finding the bottom left corner and Njunge diving the right way.
Ingotsi made it 3-0 just moments later as he headed home unmarked for a 3-0 half time lead for Robert Matano’s side.
Wazito’s defensive and goalkeeping errors were their main undoing and Leopards were taking full advantage. Mike Kibwage put his name on the scoresheet when his miscued cross was turned into the back of his own net by Njunge for a 4-0 Leopards lead.
Frank Ouna’s side were then handed a penalty of their own when Dennis Shikayi hacked down his marker. Dennis Gicheru stepped up and easily beat Gabriel Andika.
Ingotsi grabbed his second of match with another well-taken header at the hour mark before substitute Samuel Ndung’u got his second goal in Ingwe colors, his shot outside the box squirming under Njunge’s arms.
There was still time for a seventh goal and it also came from the spot, Kitenge stepping forward to complete his hat-trick of penalties.
The victory books Leopards a semifinal date with Vihiga United. Kariobangi Sharks and Sony Sugar will play off the second semifinal.
This is the furthest Leopards have gone in the competition since winning it in 2013 by beating nemesis Gor Mahia 1-0 in the final. Should they go on and win it, it will be their first domestic silverware since then.
