Goals from midfielder Humphrey Mieno and defender Shafiq Batambuze saw Tusker FC edge 10-man Posta Rangers 2-1 to qualify for the semifinals of the 2016 GOtv Shield competition and keep up their hopes of winning two titles this season.
The two sides clashed at the Thika Stadium, Wednesday afternoon, with both looking to fill the last remaining semifinal spot and it was the Brewers who edged it thanks to a goal either side of the interval.
After a cagey start, the Kenyan Premier League leaders raced into the lead in the 25th minute when Mieno turned home a pass from Allan Wanga. The lanky midfielder should have doubled the lead three minutes later but he directed his effort wide after getting in the end of a cross from Noah Wafula.
Tusker seemed to have done enough to go into the break ahead but Timothy Otieno had other ideas, hitting the equalizer with just two minutes to the interval.
Titus Achesa had the first chance of the second half but he was denied by David Okello. Posta, the 2014 losing finalists, were then dealt a huge blow when defender Joackins Atudo was sent off for a second bookable foul on Wanga, his exit handing the momentum to his former employers.
Atudo had barely entered the dressing room when Batambuze sunk the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the area from the resultant freekick. The Brewers then easily saw off the rest of the match to book their semifinal spot where they will play National Super League outfit KCB.
Kariobangi Sharks and Ulinzi Stars will contest the other semifinal. Both matches are set for this Saturday, October 1 at the Afraha Stadium, Nakuru.
