The level of ignorance within Kenya’s political class was exposed for the umpteenth time following Kenya Sevens’ historic triumph at the Singapore Sevens.
Shujaa won their maiden HSBC World Sevens Series title, thrashing Series leaders and reigning champions Fiji 30-7 in the Main Cup final, Sunday April 18.
The win was received and celebrated like no other with the world of rugby and fans congratulating Benjamin Ayimba’s boys who had waited for 17 years to lay their hands on the winners’ trophy.
Politicians always tend to jump on such national achievements, seeing them as the most perfect of opportunities to earn them some celebrity status in the eyes of their followers.

The win drew reaction from Kenyans who took to social media to congratulate the team, politicians notwithstanding. However, some of the messages left their senders red-faced and embarrassed and exposed their ignorance of the game.
Kiambu Governor William Kabogo took to his twitter account to congratulate the team but the innocent message had glaring factual error.
“Congratulations Kenya sevens on the WORLD CUP win. We are proud of you, #Singapore7s,” wrote Kabogo.
Kakamega Senator Bony Khalwale was also left with an egg on the face for sending almost a similar message as Kabogo’s.
“Congratulations Kenya sevens for beating Fiji in Singapore to lift the RUGBY WORLD CUP,” wrote the outspoken Senator. Who copied the other?.
What the two failed to understand though was that this was Sevens Series and not a World Cup.
“Congratulations Kenya 7s for beating Fiji in Singapore to lift the historic Ruby World Cup,” wrote Kisii County Governor James Ongwae.
While the world thought the the initial post had demonstrated enough ignorance of rugby knowledge from our leaders, Bungoma Senator and CORD co-Principal Moses Wetang’ula broke the internet with this!
Well maybe Kenya Rugby Union need to reserve one ticket to Man Weta for this year’s Safari Sevens. That way he won’t confuse the Singapore event and the one that is yet to be held later on the year.
President Uhuru Kenyatta who also sent his congrats message to the team has promised to host Shujaa for a luncheon at State House when they arrive on Tuesday.
