After much public outcry that prompted the Ministry of Sports to have a sit-down meeting with the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), former Kenya Sevens captain Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu has been reappointed as the team’s head coach.
Simiyu reportedly took full responsibility of the team’s decision to blank out sponsor Brand Kenya’s ‘Make it Kenya’ branding message during the Paris Sevens leg in protest for unpaid allowances.
The move saw the Ministry threaten to withdraw the Ksh. 20 million sponsorship of the team and the KRU board sack Simiyu as a result.
However after consultations between the Ministry and the Union, Simiyu, who led Kenya to two straight finals this past season as well as helping the team break the 100 point mark for the first time ever, was reinstated.
A statement from Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa read: “We resolved; Innocent Simiyu to be reinstated as the head coach of the Shujaa national team. In future, the federation to be consulting with the ministry before such key and serious decisions are made.”
