A solitary Yussuf Mohamed first half goal saw John Baraza’s Sofapaka FC move joint on points with second-placed Mathare United following a 1-0 successful over visiting Chemelil Sugar at the Narok Stadium, Wednesday (6).
Yusuf connected to the last of three corners conceded in succession by Chemelil in the 38th minute to hand his side a 1-0 advantage at the interval.
Chemelil, parading a starting XI of unknowns after losing their first leg regulars, chased the ball for much of the opening half but their hosts barely threatened keeper Richard Aimo’s goalmouth area until the goal happened.
Sofapaka created better chances after the interval with Stephen Waruru getting there fine chances during the opening 10 minutes of the second half as he headed wide, then saw a sliced effort deflected for a corner after he was picked by Ellie Asieche.
On the opposite end, Wycliffe Kasaya was counting his blessings after he was beaten to the ball by Nicholas Akoko who saw his effort hit the foot of the post in what was Chemelil’s best chance of the entire match.
Waruru would then be denied by the offside flag while Mousa Omar sent a free-kick over as the 2009 champions went in pursuit of the second goal which wouldn’t come. The result, their fourth win in five matches, sees Baraza’s charges tie Mathare United on 31 points, the Slum Boys having settled for a 2-2 stalemate at Nzoia Sugar.
