Three wins, a draw and no defeat saw Sony Sugar head coach Salim Babu win the Fidelity Insurance Coach of the Month for May, the soft-spoken tactician edging Gor Mahia’s Jose Marcelo ‘Ze Maria’, to the award.
Babu becomes the fourth recipient of the award, following in the footsteps of Mathare United’s Francis Kimanzi, AFC Leopards Ivan Minnaert and Posta Rangers’ Zedekiah Otieno who won the awards in February, March and April respectively.
Sony began the month in relegation zone but cleansheet victories over Sofapaka (1-0), Thika United (1-0) and Nairobi City Stars (2-0) and a 1-1 draw with Tusker FC saw them go into the mid-season break at position 10 with 19 points.
Babu got the nod of the Sports Journalist Association of Kenya (SJAK) Football Commission, garnering 15 points of the votes, two ahead of his closest challenger Gor Mahia’s Ze Maria who led the club to four wins in four.
Tusker boss Paul Nkata finished third on 8 points.
Babu, who succeeded Leonard Odipo at the helm in April, took home Kshs. 50,000 and a trophy.
