Fredrick Onyango’s first goal of the season secured Sony Sugar a point away to Kenyan Premier League leaders Tusker FC who failed to hold on to a first leg lead given to them by captain James Situma, the two sides battling to a 1-1 draw in an early kickoff at the Kasarani Stadium, Saturday afternoon.
Situma gave Tusker the lead against the run of play in the 28th minute but Onyango slammed home the equalizer in the 68th minute to salvage a point for Salim Babu’s side.
Noah Wafula could have given the Brewers the winner in stoppage time after Victor Ayugi’s attempted headed pass back to his goalkeeper fell on the winger’s path but his effort came off the middle of the post with Timothy Odhiambo beaten.
Sony should have broken the deadlock prior to conceding after a confusion from defender Eugene Asike and goalkeeper David Okello saw the latter spill the ball inside the six-yard area but Situma was quick to punt the ball away to safety. Boniface Muchiri then saw his curled effort whisker just over during a fine attacking spell by the former champions.
Tusker buried their chance on the other end with Situma booting home unmarked from a Humphrey Mieno corner.
Amos Asembeka should have restored parity just before the interval but Okello came off his line, went down low and made a brilliant save.
A second half of few chances was decided by Onyango who finished at the far post after being put through by Daniel Ochieng.
