Allan Wanga pulled a goal clear in the race for the 2019 Kenyan Premier League golden boot as he led Kakamega Homeboyz to a 2-0 win over Nzoia United 2-0 in a highly charged match at the latter’s Sudi Stadium, Bungoma.
With neither Sofapaka’s Umaru Kasumba (on 16 goals) nor Ulinzi Stars’ Enosh Ocheing (15 goals) scoring during this gameweek, Wanga had the opportunity to nudge ahead, which he did.
After a frenetic start to the match, Homeboyz silenced the home crowd at the quarter hour mark when David Odhiambo struck home the opener.
Nzoia, who won this corresponding fixture 3-1 last season, were finding it hard to break down the Homeboyz roadblock that was stationed in front of them.
The same could not be said of the visitors who doubled their lead 10 minutes to the interval courtesy of Wanga, the Kenyan international scoring for a 17th time this season. Should he get over the line as the leading scorer, it will be the second time he’d have won the award after his maiden title in 2007 when he banged 23 goals while donning the yellow and black of Tusker.
Tension boiled over on the stands as a section of fans exchanged blows, forcing the referee to halt play for a couple of minutes before cooler heads reigned.
Playing at home, Nzoia were obliged to keep attacking but the Homeboyz defence tightened the lid as time ebbed away with visiting keeper Gabriel Andika staying alert for his second straight shut out on the road after keeping Kariobangi Sharks at bay last time out.
Tension spiralled out of the stadium and into the gates as a section of Nzoia fans attempted to block the.Homeboyz team bus from happily hitting the road back home but police contained the situation with a little teargas.
The win sees Homeboyz leapfrog Mathare United into 4th spot while Nzoia remain 12th.
Sony stylish, Tusker rampant
In other matches, Salomon Agogo and Derrick Otanga scored to steer Sony Sugar to a 2-0 home win over KCB.
Mike Madoya came off the bench with two goals as Tusker claimed an emphatic come from behind win other bottom side Mount Kenya United while Gerson Likono’s solitary goal helped Posta Rangers win at Ulinzi Stars.
