Kenyan international winger Paul Were made his much anticipated debut for AFC Leopards and played a huge part in their 3-1 win over Posta Rangers at the Machakos Stadium.
Leopards returned back to a venue within an hour’s drive to Nairobi following the chaos that saw their rain-washed, rescheduled game away to Sony Sugar in Awendo not taking place.
This one however went the distance and it was business as usual as two goals in the opening half and another after the interval handed them a routine win.
There was an extra reason for Leopards fans to attend the match following news that Were had been cleared to feature. The club’s head coach Andre Casa Mbungo didn’t think twice about throwing the speedster straight into the heat of.things.
It was a masterstroke decision as Were outstretched the Posta backline and signed in with an assist, teeing up Wyvonne Isuza’s goal which came two minutes after the second half restart.
Brian Marita had cancelled Kenneth Mutembei’s opening goal for Posta which came just four minutes in before Robinson Kamura (from whose free-kick Marita netted) made it 2-1 in the 40th minute with yet another free-kick, this one going straight in.
Were would exit the scene after 66 minutes with fellow mid season recruit Boniface Mukhekhe coming on to help see off the win, Leopards’ third in a row against Posta who are fighting to avoid the drop.
Victory saw Ingwe stretch their unbeaten run to six matches as they moved to within a point of the top half of the log.
Posta are 15th, just a point above trouble.
In other matches, Sofapaka earned a point against Kariobangi Sharks which was enough to send the Batoto ba Mungu top while Tusker FC and Sony Sugar drew 0-0.
